WHILE Super Saturday may not have proved a successful round for Cobden’s senior footballers, for netballer Helene Foster it was a special one.

The talented division one player celebrated her 300th senior game on Saturday – and celebrated the milestone with a 45-goal win over Camperdown and was named among the best on court for the Bombers.

Surrounded by family, friends and a large crowd of Bombers supporters, Foster ran through a ‘Bomber banner’ before the start of the match to mark the occasion.

According to the Bombers’ senior netball coach, Sophie Hinkley, Helene – or ‘H’ as she is affectionately referred to – is enjoying a successful return to the court after having last season off.

“H took last season off with pregnancy, and had her second child Jack earlier this year so it’s great to have her back on the court this year,” Hinkley said.

“She is an integral part of our div one side and is always reliable week in, week out.

“She’s a very effective mid-courter and we can always depend on her to deliver. She’s really strong on the court and a great club person.”

Foster was joined at the courts by her number one supporters, husband Paul (a former senior captain and coach of the Bombers) and children Amelia and Jack.

The Bombers dominated the netball courts on Saturday, winning six of the seven games played.

Hinkley said she was thrilled with the club’s start to season 2023 and with five rounds now complete, was looking forward to the remaining four before the ‘turnaround.’

“It will be good to see where we’re sitting across all grades once we’ve played everyone,” she said.

“We play South (Warrnambool) in round nine and we anticipate that’ll be our biggest challenge but it’s one we’re looking forward to.

“We were without Jaymie Finch and Sarah Moloney last weekend and still performed really well so that’s a reflection of the depth we now have – we’re very fortunate to have that.”

Netball results from last weekend were as follows:

Open – Cobden defeated Camperdown 81-27.

Division one – Cobden defeated Camperdown 74-29. Best on court: Isabelle Corneby, Rebecca Dendle and Foster.

Division two – Cobden defeated Camperdown 58-33. Best for the Bombers were Hannah Anderson, Erin Fahey and Hannah Justin.

Division three – Cobden defeated Camperdown 42-29. Best for Cobden were Jessica Anderson and Elly Harris.

In the junior matches, Cobden’s 17 and side defeated Camperdown 70-5. Best for Cobden were Matilda Darcy, Ruby Darcy and Jessica Walsh.

15 and under – Cobden defeated Camperdown 36-22. Best for the Bombers: Emily Hickey and Georgie Oborne.

13 and under – Cobden lost to Camperdown 17-23. Best for the Bombers were Daisy Bennett and Tyra Sambell.

While there was plenty of reasons to celebrate on the courts, last weekend’s Super Saturday round proved a tough one for the Bombers’ senior footballers, who faced an improving Camperdown side.

The Magpies were quick to out of the blocks, making the most of turnovers and getting the ball into their forward 50.

By the half-time break, the home side was 15 points down and was only able to add a goal in the third term while the visitors added two goals, two behinds to the board.

Final scores were Cobden 6.5.41 to Camperdown 11.11.77.

Best for the Bombers were Christian Koroneos, Jesse Williamson, Jordan Fowler, Noah Mounsey, Grady Rooke and Sam Thow.

Goals went to Martin Angus, Jack Hutt, Rooke, Ashley Rosolin, Patrick Smith and Williamson.

In contrast to the seniors, Cobden’s reserves enjoyed a big win over the Magpies, finishing with 23.16.154 to 1.0.6.

The Bombers led from the very first bounce, kicking six goals and three behinds in the first term.

They continued momentum throughout the game and kept the Magpies scoreless until the final quarter when they managed just one goal.

Among the best for the home side in what was a great team effort were Jia Anderson, Tully Darcy, Daniel Watson, Michael Koroneos and Joe Hutt.

Earlier in the day the Bombers’ under 18.5 side defeated Camperdown 14.14.98 to 5.1.31.

Best for the home team were Angus Molan, Benjamin McGlade, Blake Mottram, Tyler Humphrey, Stephen Benallack and Isaac McVilly.

Goals went to Humphrey (4), McVilly (3), Archie Dalziel (2), Benjamin McGlade (2), Jordan Beard, Stephen Benallack and Jayden Gass.
