Mortlake South Wind Farm turbines installed
MORTLAKE South Wind Farm developer Acciona has announced the successful installation of the site’s 35 wind turbines.
MORTLAKE South Wind Farm developer Acciona has announced the successful installation of the site’s 35 wind turbines.
The 35th turbine was installed on Friday, May 28, taking the project past another significant milestone on the way to generating enough clean electricity to power up to 117,000 homes.
The erection of the turbines marks a milestone for the developer after the erection of the first turbine began in late November.
The 35 wind turbines feature a hub height of 105m above ground, and are expected to each be capable of producing 4.5MW of clean energy – the highest output of any wind turbine currently operational in Australia.
Acciona community and stakeholder liaison Theo Carroll said it had taken almost 500,000 hours of hard work from the local workforce to reach the milestone.
“The local team constructing Mortlake South Wind Farm has done a fantastic job tackling the challenges brought on by COVID-19 and has delivered significant achievements along the way,” he said.
“One of these achievements is the industry-first ‘super-lift’ used to assemble 24 of the 35 turbines. The ‘super-lift’ is the heaviest and highest crane lift at a wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere, weighing in at 210 tonnes.
“The assembly team combined the three heaviest components – the nacelle, hub and drive train – on the ground and lifted them into place in a single movement.”
Mortlake South Wind Farm has used Australian steel for the turbine towers, which were manufactured at Keppel Prince in Portland and Haywards Steel in Tasmania.
“To celebrate this milestone, Acciona will be hosting tours around Mortlake South Wind Farm on Saturday, July 17,” Mr Carroll said.
“Keep an eye on the papers in the coming weeks to find out how to register.”
