DESPITE the possibility of inclement weather causing many people to cancel at the last minute, over 50 walkers conquered the Four Peaks Challenge earlier this month.
Many walkers were new to the challenge, with many pledging to come back again next year and to bring their friends to such a unique experience.
Event organiser John Fallon said there would have been another 20 or 30 people had the weather not been poor.
“I know lots of people coming out of Melbourne and Geelong decided not to travel, but it’s a bit hard to tell because we even had people from Timboon choose not to come.
“Generally, people were enthusiastic about the event. It was a chance to go to all four peaks in one day and to experience the challenge and the views from the top, and also to talk with lots of like-minded people.
“It was a little disappointing that we couldn’t beat last year’s total but considering the weather we were happy with the turnout.”
Mr Fallon thanked the Friends of Mt Leura volunteers and the Mt Leura, Mt Elephant and Mt Noorat reserve management committees for their continued assistance in running this event.
“All walkers left with a greater appreciation of the four volcanic peaks and their position on the Victorian Volcanic Plain,” he said.
“Anytime that we are able to promote the three reserves in our local community is a good thing.”
