Moyne Shire set to give away free trees
MOYNE Shire Council will celebrate National Tree Day this year by giving away free trees.
National Tree Day was established in 1996 by Planet Ark and in the years since has become the nation’s largest community tree planning and nature care event.
Moyne Shire Council has designed the giveaway as “a great opportunity to maintain and enhance the beautiful environment in Moyne Shire for local wildlife, as well as ensuring the region continues to be a great place to live”.
Moyne Shire mayor Ian Smith said council is seeking residents to get their hands dirty for the environment and get the benefits which come from spending time outdoors.
The free tree giveaway will be held at five locations across two days this week.
Thursday, July 25:
Port Fairy at The Goods Shed between 9.30am and 10.30am;
Koroit at Village Green between 11.30am and 12.30pm; and
Hawkesdale at the memorial between 2pm and 3pm.
Friday, July 26:
Garvoc at the playground between 10am-11am; and
Mortlake at Market Square between 12pm-1pm.
Cr Smith encouraged members of the community to get involved, with a wide range of trees available.
“We’ll have a range of indigenous native trees available including species such as Red Flowering Gum and Broadleaf Hop Bush,” he said.
“We invite people to come pick up their free tree at one of our community information sessions across the shire.”
Cr Smith said the occasion would also provide an opportunity for the community to engage with council officers to learn more about the shire’s environmental management, or even just to learn more about maintaining vegetation around the home.
“The info sessions are also an opportunity to talk to our environment team about environmental management in Moyne, and our waste education officer about how council handles household waste,” he said.
“You could also have a chat with our emergency management officer about vegetation management around the home, and general fire safety.”
