CAMPERDOWN’S Mt Leura came alive last weekend with round three of the 2023 Victorian Hillclimb Championship.
The event, organised and run by the Ballarat Light Car Club Inc., attracted 78 starters according to event clerk of course, Wayne Drew.
“With all but one starter finishing the course, it was an outstanding weekend of motorsport,” Drew said.
Competition got underway at 10am on Saturday and Sunday, with competitors getting in five runs on the Saturday and four runs on Sunday.
Classes varied from road registered “Street Cars” and Formula Libre open wheelers powered by high output motorcycle engines, through to sports sedans, historics and everything in between.
Fastest time of the day was posted by David Mahon in his Dallara Hayabusa F394 with a time of 28.18 seconds in his final run on Sunday over the 803-metre course.
First time Mt Leura competitor Robin Bailey, in the spectacular black MGB GT V8, took first place in his class with a time of 36.05 seconds.
Somewhat “local” Warren Heath posted a time of 34.67 in the Laser Sport to win his class Improved Production 2WD up to 1600cc.
All these drivers and more will be back at Mt Leura on May 20 and 21 for round five of the championship, which is also a round of the Cross Boarder Challenge with more South Australian competitors expected.
