MOUNT View Aged Care residents spent the past few weeks honing their millinery skills to create their own hats in the lead up to Oaks Day 2023.
The residents had been hard at work creating and decorating their race day hats under the watchful eye of renowned local milliner Georgina Conheady, who volunteered her time to ensure everyone looked their best for a special race day luncheon last Thursday.
Mount View Aged Care activities and lifestyle Bec Fairey said the residents had thoroughly enjoyed the festivities.
“Four weeks ago, Georgina started coming down to give a class, which went for a good couple of hours as she started showing us how to make a hat,” she said.
“All the ladies got to choose the colours and materials as they created their own hats.”
Ms Conheady said she had been impressed by the abilities of the residents as they designed hats which would not be out of place at some of Australia’s biggest races.
“It’s been great to see everyone having different colours and designs to their liking,” she said.
“Everyone chose different textures and we’ve been slowly sewing everything together with their input of where they want their materials and designs.
“I think the hats look fantastic, they all look really good.”
Mount View Aged Care residents offered a heartfelt thanks to Ms Conheady for her willingness to dedicate her time to visiting each week.
“It’s a lovely thing to do,” Lorraine Eldred said.
Renee Kenna thanked Ms Conheady on behalf of the residents.
“I’d just like to say a big thank you to Georgina for coming,” she said.
“It’s very good of her to entertain us old people and we really enjoyed it.
“She’s a breath of fresh air.”
