New club looks to the future
CAMPERDOWN locals could soon have a new Rotary club, with a meeting being held next month to gauge interest.

CAMPERDOWN locals could soon have a new Rotary club, with a meeting being held next month to gauge interest.
The club – which would be dubbed the Rotary Club of Camperdown Lakes and Craters – has the approval of Rotary International, according to club chairman Rob Harris.
He said the Rotary Club of Camperdown had successfully served the community for many years but had a “dwindling membership”.
A past member, and past president Peter James along with community member Tamar Edwards have teamed up to “birth an alternate” Rotary club in Camperdown.
“The new club has the full blessing of Rotary International as well as the support of the local district administration,” Mr Harris said.
Over 38 years he has been a member of various Rotary clubs including Longford Tasmania, Cranbourne, Warrnambool Central, Torquay, Darwin North as well as a recent stint as a member of Camperdown.
Mr Harris said while at the Camperdown club he was keen to get a new direction established as it was down to half a dozen members but said he was on a “different wavelength to the current Camperdown administration”.
Mr James and Ms Edwards shared this view and the idea of a new “younger style” club was birthed.
Mr Harris said the group already has an interest list of about 30 people.
“Rotary has changed significantly over the years and the old requirement of a weekly dinner meeting has long gone,” he said.
“The alternate Camperdown Club will have a monthly meeting structure with quality guest speakers, a heavy emphasis on local community projects and even has a motto – We have a lot of fun being serious’.”
Interested residents are invited to attend an interest meeting on Thursday, June 9 at the Camperdown WellNest at 6pm for 6.30pm start.
