Society treasurer Jennifer Kripp said the band was formed in 1934 with a hiatus during war years, before finally disbanding in 1984.

She said former members recall playing at all major district events, parades and shows.

“Cary Mackieson, the last band leader, donated his Cobden Pipe Band Major uniform and Betty Millard donated her husband’s outfit and kettle drum to the Cobden Historical Society,” Mrs Kripp said.

The collection of pieces now sits pride of place in a purpose-built display case.

Mrs Kripp said the society was able to purchase a mannequin for the display and complete the display case thanks to a grant from the Cobden and District Community Bank.

“The display case was built by John Wason, paintings and other incidentals done by historical member Colin Kerr,” she said.

“The doll is wearing a replica of the first band costume, donated by Wilma McIntosh.

“The tartan is Royal Stewart and was purchased from Geelong Woollen Mill pre-war, however the mill discontinued during the war years.

“Another supplier had to be found probably Warrnambool Mill as tartan skirts became popular with ladies and they did produce many of the tartan fabrics.”
