HI there, readers; I’m the newest recruit at Western District Newspapers, Christine Kirk.
I’m a local girl; I live one kilometre outside Darlington, and went to school in Derrinallum.
I also volunteered at St Vinnie’s in Camperdown while doing my Duke of Edinburgh award, so I’ve become known around Camperdown as well.
I applied for a cadetship with Western District Newspapers at the end of last year, having spent that year completing a traineeship in Business Administration at Corangamite Shire Council.
I’ve been passionate about writing since age 13; I started on a creative writing piece when I was at school one day, then unburied it the next year and continued it.
From there, I’ve written a series of around 33 books.
None of them have been published as of yet, but I have sent off my first book to publishers, and have started saving money for a self-publishing back-up route.
When I saw this opportunity arise, I knew I had to take it.
So far, I’ve loved it.
Each day I’m learning something new, or getting extra tips on photography and journalism.
The people I work with are delightful and have made me feel welcome, and are more than willing to help me out whenever I need.
I’ve been shown small tips and tricks which have helped me improve my stories each time I write a new one.
I have been supported throughout my first week here, shadowing another journalist to learn through exposure to various situations.
I believe writing newspaper articles will help me improve my writing skills, and will enhance my love of writing.
This will include learning shorthand, condensing information, and using shorter sentences and paragraphs.
I’m looking forward to meeting more people in the area and to bring their stories to light.
I hope to continue into the future as a journalist doing something I love, and maybe have one of my novels published.
I also hope young people reading this will be encouraged to find a job they love; it doesn’t matter where you begin your career, but you will eventually find a job you love.
