NEW signage has been installed at the Camperdown Cemetery.

The initiative was a project of the Camperdown Cemetery Trust as a way for people to learn more about a number of individuals laid to rest at the cemetery.

In consultation with Camperdown and District Historical Society and extensive research by members of the society, details were prepared on 19 graves which tell the story of several “significant”

individuals in the history of Camperdown, who made an indelible impression on the community we all enjoy today.

Following discussions with the Corangamite Shire the Trust was provided with details of possible grant options to assist with the project.

The Trust received a grant towards the cost of the signs from the ‘Australian Government’s Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) program’.

Trust chairperson Bob Hewitt said the grant was appreciated and enabled the project to proceed with development of the signs.

The details on three signs were done in the same style as the Lions heritage signs along the Avenue in Camperdown.

The signs have recently been installed in the gardens at the cemetery close to the Ian Davis Information Centre.

A map reference beside each biography can then be tracked on the cemetery map, inside the information centre so you can visit the relevant grave.

Mr Hewitt said the project would not have been possible without the assistance of a number of groups and individuals.

“The historical society members who undertook the research into the information on the signs, to Peter Conheady from Mr Sign and Dave Thomas for their assistance with the signs and construction of the frames, and to Brian Smith and Colin Hayman for concreting of the area,” he said.

“The signs are another project that the Trust has undertaken to ensure that the cemetery continues to remain an important asset to Camperdown and the surrounding area.”
