Oh so close...

THEY may be out of finals contention, but Camperdown’s senior footballers certainly made ladder leaders South Warrnambool earn their points last weekend.

The Magpies put on a strong show against the Hampden League benchmark on Saturday, getting within just eight points of toppling the Roosters.

The opening quarter saw the Roosters kick 6.3 to the Magpies’ 3.2 before a relatively even second term saw just eight points separating the two sides.

That set the scene for the remainder of the day, with both sides limited to four and five goals.

The Magpies worked hard to restrict goaling opportunities for the home side, applying pressure all over the ground and making good use of the ball.

Final scores were South Warrnambool 12.13.85 to Camperdown 11.11.77.

Luke Ball, Angus Gordon and Fraser Lucas each kicked two for the side while Riley Arnold, Charlie Lucas, Zac Sinnott, Cameron Spence and Lenny Stephens added one each.

Among the best were Eric Guthrie, Riley Arnold, Charlie Lucas, Luke O’Neil, Zach Sinnott and Brian Fanning.

Camperdown’s reserves sit four games out of the top five and found the second-placed Roosters too strong.

The Roosters dominated the ground, kicking a percentage-boosting 34.17.221 to Camperdown’s 2.0.12.

Tim Fitzgerald and Rory Swayn were the only goal scorers for the Magpies while Jeremy Lucas, Logan Mahony, Tarkyn Love, Devon Coates, Xavier O’Connor and Jake Muddle were named in the best.

It was a tough day on the netball courts for the Magpies, with no wins recorded for the day.
