Les’ legacy lives on...

FOR a small community, Timboon and surrounding areas have shown they have a big heart.

On Friday, the Good Friday Appeal executive director Rebecca Cowan paid a visit to present a special plaque to representatives of the Timboon Good Friday Appeal for raising $1 million for the appeal.

The significant milestone was reached in 2018, but with delays due to COVID, was only presented on Friday.

As of this year the Timboon appeal, which encompasses Simpson, Port Campbell, Peterborough, Princetown, Brucknell-Ayrford, Ecklin, Kennedys Creek, Lower Heytesbury, Nirranda South,

Nullawarre and Timboon has raised $1.29 million for the appeal.

Ms Cowan paid tribute to the continued efforts and support from locals.

“It’s a huge amount for such a small community,” she said.

“We’re here to thank the Timboon community for raising over $47,000 this year as well.

“It’s wonderful to be here meeting everyone.”

Timboon Good Friday Appeal area manager Lee Edge thanked the wider community for its ongoing support of the appeal.

“We all know someone that has received support from the Royal Childrens Hospital,” she said.

“Thank you to everyone that has helped over the years, either through donations, sponsorship, volunteering or attending one of our event.

“Without people’s donations it wouldn’t have continued all these years.”

Ms Edge took over running the appeal from Les Gunn (deceased) who had become synonymous with the appeal in the community.

She said she took the plaque to show his wife, Gwenda, who also supported her husband’s efforts of the years.

Ms Edge said the community had spent thousands of hours volunteering for the appeal over the years.

“Without the help of sponsors, collectors and people have donated it (the milestone figure) wouldn’t have happened,” she said.

“In Les’s words’ ‘we do it for the kids’.”
