MID way through the Hampden League season, Cobden’s Open netball side currently sits second on the ladder.

The Bombers, just a game behind benchmark club South Warrnambool and percentage ahead of the third-placed Koroit Saints, enjoyed a comfortable 13-goal win over Terang Mortlake last weekend.

Playing at home on Saturday, the Bombers jumped the Bloods from the first whistle leading by five goals at the end of the opening quarter.

However, the Bloods fought back in the second, applying strong defensive pressure and limiting the Bombers’ scoring opportunities to get to within two goals at the main break.

An 18 goal to nine third term for the Bombers proved pivotal for the side, which eventually ran home with a 61-46 victory.

Best for the Bombers were Jessica Walsh, Emily Finch (with 22 goals for the day) and Lara Taylor.

The Bombers’ division one side had a tough battle with the Bloods, who were quick off the mark in the first quarter to lead by eight goals after the opening term.

They Bombers fought back in the second to be just two goals down at half-time but were unable to maintain momentum, going down 32-45 at the end of the day.

Best for the Bombers were Jessica Bourchier, Jessica Walsh and Kate Smith.

Other netball results from the day were:

Division two – Cobden lost to Terang Mortlake 39-40. Best players: Amy Kavenagh, Morgan Nelson and Jessica Anderson.

Division three – Cobden defeated Terang Mortlake 35-31. Best: Maggie Conheady, Tayla Hickey and Georgia Darcy.

17 and under – Cobden defeated Terang Mortlake 51-35. Best: Nikki Clover, Ruby Darcy and Matilda Darcy.

15 and under – Terang Mortlake defeated Cobden 30-17. Best: Sarah Bridges, Hannah Robertson and Isabella Wain.

15 and under reserves –Terang Mortlake defeated Cobden 41-9. Best: Jessica MacDonald, Gracie Pearce and Victoria Buckle.

13 and under – Cobden defeated Terang Mortlake 46-6. Best: Stephanie Fleming, Athena Chivell and Zaya Howard.

13 and under reserves – Terang Mortlake defeated Cobden 22-21. Bridie Roberts, Grace Barber and Olivia Bignell.

Cobden’s senior footballers have slipped out of the five following last weekend’s round nine loss to Terang Mortlake.

The Bloods, who now sit fifth on the Hampden League ladder, jumped the Bombers early in the match, kicking 5.1 in the opening term while containing the home side to just two behinds.

The gap proved too big for the Bombers to bridge, going down by 15 points on the final siren, 11.5.71 to 13.8.86.

Kurtis Baker kicked five majors for the Bombers while Arthur Armstrong contributed three and Benjamin McGlade chipped in with two.

Other goal scorers were Joshua Hickey and Michael Koroneos with one apiece.

Best for the Bombers were Kurtis Baker, Ben McGlade, Arthur Armstrong,

Jordan Fowler, Tim Auckland and Ben Berry.

The Bombers’ reserves, sitting second, had a 56-point win over the Bloods, 12.10.82 to 4.2.26.

Best for the home side were Lachie Davis, Joe Hutt, Tyler Humphrey, Louis Darcy and Luke Hickey.

Noah Mounsey and Josh Worboys both kicked three goals while Louis Darcy, Oliver Darcy, Tully Darcy, Lachie Davis, Lachlan Herschell and Kojo Opuku-Agyeman each kicked one.

Hampden League will have a bye round this weekend.

Round 10, to be played on Saturday, June 22, will see the Bombers head to Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve to take on the Hamilton Kangaroos.
