Hundreds of rare and carefully cultivated orchids filled the Cobden Civic Centre, wowing attendees with the vibrant colour and diversity on display.

Cobden and District Orchid Club president Denise Robertson said she was thrilled with the success of the show.

“It’s gone very well,” she said.

“We’ve been quite successful.

“We’re only a small club but we’re now in our 26th year.

“It’s pretty good for a small club, and a small town.”

Mrs Robertson said there had been a wonderful field of entries, with the top prize taken out by notable green-thumbs from Port Fairy Michael and Bernadette Matthews, who have earned acclaim across the state for their orchids grown in a hydraulic hothouse which is meticulously tended.

“We had all different sorts of orchids on display,” she said.

“We always have a good show.

“Our grand champion from Michael and Bernadette Matthews was incredible.

“There are so many natives on display, with a huge variety.

Mrs Robertson said the event had been well attended, with visitors from across the region descending on Cobden.

“There has been a lot of people coming through so we’re pleased with our success,” she said.

“On Saturday morning it was very busy, although the afternoon was a bit quiet.

“Sunday was pretty steady all day, so it’s been good.”

Mrs Robertson expressed her gratitude to sponsors on the day including Corangamite Shire, Cobden Pharmacy, Bunnings Colac and Terang and District Co-Op.

“Thank you to everyone who made this a wonderful show,” she said.
