On track: Train performance showed improvement on the Warrnambool line throughout September, the first month of full service since major works were undertaken earlier this year.

Trains have been back running since the completion of works which had seen train services cease operating on the line between June 15 and August 25.

The result saw a spike in performance with 95.8 per cent of services delivered on the Warrnambool Line throughout September – just a fraction of a percentage below the reliability performance target of 96 per cent.

The punctuality also experienced an increase, with 81.3 per cent of services running within 11 minutes of scheduled arrives and departures, however this fell below the punctuality performance target of 92 per cent.

A V/Line spokesperson said crews are now in the final stages of completing the remaining works along the line, as part of extensive efforts to improve safety ahead of VLocity trains being introduced.

A temporary train timetable will remain in place for the Warrnambool Line until October 31 (today), while remaining works are completed at night to help minimise disruption to train services.

“Warrnambool Line passengers are reminded that a temporary train timetable is in place on the line as final works are being completed ahead of the introduction of VLocity trains later this year,” the spokesperson said.

“VLocity trains are the most modern and accessible on our network and we have seen a significant increase in reliability on lines where VLocity trains have been introduced.”

Throughout the major works more than 60 crossings have been upgraded, a new crossing loop has been installed at Boorcan with 2.2km of new track as part of the Warrnambool Line Upgrade and about 70,000 sleepers are also being replaced.

A fifth weekday return service on the Warrnambool Line was added in December 2022, and planning is underway for two additional weekend services to be added to the Warrnambool Line as part of a $219 million investment for up to 200 extra weekend V/Line services in the 2023/24 State Budget.
