V/LINE lifted performance on the Warrnambool line during April despite ongoing delays hampering the overall result.

Reliability performance on the Warrnambool line was 97.4 per cent during April, meeting the reliability performance target of 96 per cent.

The figure equates to five services of the 190 scheduled for the month which were unable to run for all or part of the journey.

The line’s punctuality for April was 80.8 per cent, which sits below the performance target of 92 per cent but was also a sharp rise from the previous month when punctuality dipped to 68.6 per cent.

A V/Line spokesperson said the ongoing punctuality delays were caused by a number of factors, including speed restrictions along sections of the line due to track faults which were caused by last year’s weather events in the region, as well as a number of unrelated train faults, trespassers and emergency services requests.

However, the temporary speed restrictions which had been in effect on the line as a result of faults will be lifted today (Thursday, May 18).

“It’s encouraging to see consistently strong reliability results on the Warrnambool line following the increase in services late last year,” the spokesperson said.

Coaches replaced Warrnambool trains for all or part of the journey through parts of April as crews undertook “critical maintenance works” to rectify some of the faults caused by the weather events in late 2022.

Further works on infrastructure projects, including level crossing removal works at Deer Park, also impacted performance.

“During April, we took the opportunity to complete important improvement works along the Warrnambool line to help us continue to deliver safe and reliable services for our passengers,” the spokesperson said.
