Colac’s Highway Patrol unit was called to the incident, as well as Camperdown’s State Emergency Services (SES) unit, Country Fire Authority (CFA) units from Camperdown and Weerite, and Victoria Ambulance, at around 7.05am to find the vehicle in a tree.

Colac Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Darren Busfield said police believe the vehicle came off the road and became airborne before spinning and landing in the gap.

“At this stage, we’ve had quite a few members of the public come forward, so we’ve been pretty lucky with witnesses,” he said.

“At this stage, the investigation is ongoing.

“It appears a young male has sped through town and come to grief at the intersection.

“It appears to be that speed was the main issue.”

Ld Snr Const Busfield said no charges have been laid against the driver at this stage.

“He’s only had a slight injury to his head – a graze,” he said.

“He was transported to the Geelong Hospital and he was checked out there and released later in the day.

Bent: Guard rails were damaged where the vehicle struck them before leaving the road.

“Witnesses alledge he went through town at a high speed.

“They’ve come forward and offered their help, which is very much appreciated.

Ld Snr Const Busfield said it was fortunate there were no vehicles on the road heading towards Camperdown at the time of the incident and urged residents to take care on the roads.

“Especially with this current weather we’re having at the moment – the roads are wet, and roads are not in good condition,” he said.

“It’s more important to slow down and drive to conditions.”
