POMBORNEIT has retained the Graham Hillman Memorial Shield after smashing 328 runs against Camperdown last weekend.
The impressive innings included a blistering second division one century from Tom Place who was dismissed for 109 from 87 balls – which included 10 fours and five sixes.
Place earlier won the toss and elected to bat at the SA Wright Oval for what was the 26th occasion Pomborneit and Camperdown have met for the Graham Hillman Memorial Shield.
Openers Dave Murphy and Place got the team off to a blistering start with an opening partnership of 165 in 22.5 overs before Murphy was caught on the boundary for 82 off 83 balls.
His innings included seven fours and three sixes.
Place continued the momentum and was well supported by Stephen Hill (36 from 58 balls) and Josh Place (31 from 38) as the Bulls reached 9/328 from their 50 overs.
Two early wickets to Hunter Reynolds put the Bulls right on top in Camperdown’s run chase, while his opening bowling partner, 15 year-old division one debutante Finn Tolland, bowled an impressive first spell of 0/15 off six.
Off-spinner Tharaka Sendanayake tore through the Lakers’ middle order, claiming four wickets including a superb one handed caught and bowled.
He was ably supported by some tight bowling from Danussika Bandara (1/23 off 10 overs) and Stephen Hill (3/31 from 10) as the home side was dismissed for 137 in the 45th over.
Pomborneit retained the shield by 191 runs and Tom Place was awarded the Allan McKenzie Medal for player of the match.
In division two, Pomborneit batted first against Ecklin.
The innings was held together by number three Simon Tolland who went in to bat in the second over and was finally dismissed on the last ball of the innings for 72 from 126 balls.
Other contributions came from Wes Lenehan (17), Stephen Walters (17) and skipper Matthew Richardson (14).
The biggest partnership of the innings was an eighth wicket partnership of 44 between Tolland and Gavin Reynolds – who made his highest score in senior cricket of 21 not out from 36 balls.
Ecklin got off to a quick start but two wickets to Aaron Van Es pegged back the scoring.
Stephen Walters kept things tight with 2/20 from eight overs but at 5/141 the visitors looked to have the game in the bag.
Van Es returned to the attack to take two more wickets while Gavin Reynolds took one and the Frogs were reduced to 8/147.
The Bulls were unable to get another breakthrough; Ecklin passing the score in the 35th over to record a two wicket win.
Aaron Van Es was the best of the bowlers with 4/25.
In division three Camperdown batted first and looked in control for much of their innings but a late order collapse saw them restricted to 9/163 from their 40 overs.
Harley Reynolds claimed the crucial wicket of Camperdown captain Rick McKenzie as well as the last two wickets to fall; leading the bowlers with 3/15 off three overs.
Donnie McInnes (2/21 from eight) and Tayla Reynolds (2/27 from eight) also impressed.
At 4/43 the Bulls had plenty of work to do but a 108-run partnership between stand-in captain Garry Riches and under 16 player Ben Whytcross for the fifth wicket changed the game and put the Bulls in control.
Whytcross was dismissed for his highest senior score of 33 from 63 balls.
Opener Riches batted through the innings until the score was passed – unbeaten on 68 from 127 balls, continuing his consistent form and leading the division three Bulls to their first win of the season.
In the women’s competition, Pomborneit Gold hosted Carlisle River at Pomborneit on Sunday.
Despite losing two early wickets, the team scored well through its innings to finish at 4/137 from 20 overs.
Ultra-consistent captain Samantha Coxon got the job done again with 30 retired from 35 balls including five boundaries.
Rachel Dendle made 18 from 21 balls while the innings was finished off well by Nellie Sadler (15 not out) and Grace Lee (30 retired) in his first game of the season for Pomborneit.
Opening bowlers Sam Coxon and Jessica Moulden took an early wicket each, but it was Tayla Reynolds who ripped through the Carlisle River batting order – at one stage taking three wickets in four balls.
Reynolds finished with 4/10.
Nellie Sadler and Grace Lee also took a wicket each as the visitors, who were looking good at 3/62, collapsed to be all out for 64.
Pomborneit Maroon played Bookaar at the Frederick Street oval and had a disastrous time at the crease.
They batted first and were bundled out for just 21 runs.
Lily Van Es (five not out from 26 balls) and stand-in captain Debra Reynolds (three from 15 balls) were the only players to reach double figures in balls faced.
The Maroon team started well with the ball, reducing the home team to 3/3 then 4/19, with opening bowlers Lily Van Es and Tahlia Denham taking two wickets each.
Bookaar consolidated and batted out their overs to finish at 5/122.
