THIS Saturday’s Hampden League preliminary final round looks set to be a sea of red and black, with five Cobden netball sides taking the court.

The Bombers will be well represented on the courts on the weekend, with the club’s open, division 2, 17 and under, 17 and under reserve and 15 and under teams all making it through to the preliminary round.

The open side took on South Warrnambool in last Saturday’s second semi-final but was defeated by just one goal, 42-43, sending them to the preliminary final showdown against Koroit this weekend.

Open coach Sophie Hinkley praised the efforts of her team, saying it was an “extremely exciting game of closely contested netball” which was won after the final siren on a penalty shot.

“We’ve had a few close games during the season but none really that went goal for goal for the majority of the game like it did on Saturday,” Hinkley said.

“I think the biggest margin was only about three or four goals for the entire game so that just shows how close the two sides are - it was an exciting final to watch and be a part of.”

Hinkley believes the closeness of the weekend’s game will hold her side in good stead coming in to this weekend’s preliminary final clash with Koroit.

“Our girls know what it takes to win these big matches and I have full confidence in them,” she said.

“They all did an amazing job and they’ll take this momentum into this weekend. If we’re lucky enough to earn a spot in the grand final the experience from last weekend will hold us in good stead.

We have to keep our composure, maintain that intensity for all four quarters and really play our solid form of netball to win.”

In other games last weekend, the Bombers’ under 17 side lost to Koroit 44-28. They will play Camperdown this Saturday.

And last Sunday, the division two side defeated South Warrnambool 36-32.

Best for the Bombers were Gabrielle Beames, Jessica Walsh and Hannah Anderson.

Division two will play Koroit this weekend.

In the 17 and under reserves, Cobden lost to South Warrnambool 28-22 while the 15 and unders defeated Camperdown 31-22 (best for the Bombers were Matilda Darcy, Ruby Darcy and Krystal Blain).

Cobden’s 13 and under side was put out of the finals race following its 13-27 loss to North Warrnambool last Sunday.
