COBDEN/Mortlake’s under 15 cricketers are 2022/23 premiers.
The team put on a solid performance with both bat and ball last Sunday to defeat Merrivale by two wickets – bringing home the Warrnambool and District title for the second consecutive season.
Coach Leigh Walsh said he “couldn’t be prouder” of the team and the efforts of all players from both clubs.
“All the boys had a great day; our bowlers did an exceptional job and we followed that up with the bat,” he said.
“Having the two clubs come together to field a 15s in the Warrnambool league has worked really well for us both and it gives them all another opportunity for extra game time.
“I’m grateful to Shane Slater (Mortlake) who also helps train the side in the great indoor facility at Farran Oval each Wednesday night.”
Playing at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval last weekend, Cobden/Mortlake posted a creditable 8/151 while restricting Merrivale to 7/147.
The game culminated with a boundary from 14 year-old Lenny Walsh to take the victory.
“Lenny’s four in about the second last over got us over the line so that was no doubt exciting for him,” Walsh said.
“All the boys played really well, with team captain Josh Slater (Mortlake) being awarded player of the match. He batted really well at number five to make 48 and was a great leader on-field.”
Cobden’s Campbell Walsh was also strong with the bat, hitting 46 from 85 balls, while best bowling figures went to Cobden cousins Edmund Walsh 2/15 off four and Parker Walsh 2/26 off eight.
The premiership side included Cobden’s Albie Cheeseman, Billy Roberts and Campbell, Edmund, Parker and Lenny Walsh., alongside Mortlake’s Josh Slater, Cam Goddard, Kane Killen, Cooper Herry and Sam Wareham.
