PREMIERS!

COBDEN’S netballers may have fallen short of an open premiership flag last weekend, but coach Sophie Hinkley was thrilled with their performance.
In front of a big crowd at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval on Saturday, the team fell just five goals short of victory over South Warrnambool.
“I was really happy with the girls played overall; it was just a five-minute lapse in the final quarter that allowed South to get right back in the game and run over us on the scoreboard,” Hinkley said.
“We’re all really disappointed not to have won, it was certainly a game that was well within our reach – it’s going to hurt for a while.
“We had been talking all season about the importance of maintaining our intensity and our concentration, and how those little lapses can be costly, and it was.
“We went from being two goals up at the start of the final quarter to six goals down in a short space of time. It again highlights just how hard it is to win a premiership.”
A highlight of the day, according to Hinkley, was the 17 and under game which was won by the Bombers.
“We were absolutely thrilled to watch both our 17s and 17 reserve sides in their respective grand finals,” Hinkley said.
“The 17s won and that really holds the club in good stead for the future. It’s so important for our club as these are our future senior players so it will be exciting to see their netball develop in the years to come.”
The Bombers’ 17 and under side fought hard to secure the premiership, defeating Koroit by just two goals, 34-32 in a nail-biting game.
The Bombers went out strong, going into the half-time break with a handy three goal lead and managed to hold on until the final whistle to take the 2022 flag.
Grace Taylor was named best on court in the final.
In the 17 and under reserves match, South Warrnambool proved too strong for the Bombers, winning 28-19.
