POMBORNEIT Maroon has created history, taking out the first ever under 13 premiership flag.

In what was the first season for points in South West Cricket, the Maroons put on a great display last week to defeat the Terang/Noorat Giants, 5/93cc to 8/84cc.

The Maroon’s George Sadler was named player of the match following an unbeaten knock of 23 runs.

He also took one wicket and was involved with two run-outs.

While the under 13 competition has been played for many years, 2022/23 was the first season that points have been played for and finals contested.

Terang/Noorat and Pomborneit Maroon finished first and second respectively after the home and away competition, and both won their qualifying and semi-finals to make it through to the decider.

Terang/Noorat won the toss and sent the Bulls in to bat in warm conditions on the very well-presented Noorat ground.

After a couple of early wickets, opener George Sadler steadied the ship with a composed innings of 23 retired.

Middle order batter Hugo Saarikallio was the other mainstay of the innings, reaching 20 retired with a combination of good placement and good running between the wickets.

Pomborneit Maroon finished their innings on 5/93 after 24 overs.

George Sadler continued his good game by bowling Terang/Noorat opener Leo Beasley in the second over of the innings.

Josh Reynolds bowled Hugh Kenna to reduce the Giants to 2/16, then 3/21 after a run out by Marc Van Es.

Terang/Noorat then put together solid partnerships of 21 for the fourth wicket and 22 for the 5th wicket before Bailey Fox broke through to have the Giants at 6/64.

Flynn Gleeson was a thorn in Pomborneit's side, batting well for his 20 retired.

Young players Crawford Dunn, Jake Van Es and Rieley Dempsey all stood up with the ball, each of their two over spells were well bowled and kept the game tight. At 7/83 after 23 overs, Terang/Noorat needed 12 off the last over to win.

Josh Reynolds conceded just the one run from the 24th over, which included a run out by George Sadler who now had the keepers’ gloves on.

A nine-run win to Pomborneit Maroon, Pomborneit's first junior premiership since the 2003/04 triumph by the club's under 16 boys team.

George Sadler was awarded the player of the match for his 23 retired, one wicket and two run outs.
