Playing at Mack Oval last Sunday, Mortlake Cobden lost the toss against Port Fairy and was sent in to bat.

A strong knock from opener Paddy Hassett saw him retire on 60 while team-mate Albie Cheeseman also contributed a strong 54 to the scoreboard.

Fellow team-mate Max Slater (13) also performed well with the bat, with the team finishing on 9/157 in the 43rd over.

In reply Port Fairy was restricted to 10/68 in the 37th over.

Mortlake Cobden’s Sam Wareham took 3/10 from six overs while Leoard Walsh 2/13 off five, Paddy Hassett 2/6 from four, Sonny Podger 1/6, Eamon Sloane 1/6 and Cameron Goddard 1/1 were also effective at the crease.

Cobden Cricket Club’s under 13 side are also celebrating a premiership, winning the 2023/24 South West grand final.

The Knights, who finished the home and away season on top of the league ladder, earned a place in last Friday’s grand final against Bookaar after defeating Pomborneit in the semi-final the previous week.

The Pelicans won the toss and elected to bat, reaching 7/60 after 24 overs.

Darby Sinnott was the team’s highest scorer, unbeaten on 18, while for the Knights Rhys Darcy took 2/4 and wickets also fell to bowlers Ryan Bailey, Luke Paton and Lenny Murfett.

In reply, Cobden reached 4/61 in the 18th over, with Michael Benallack retired on 20, Ryan Bailey contributed 11 and opener Clement Walsh made 6.

Samuel Robertson (4) and Nathan Patullock (2) were both unbeaten for the day.

Cobden’s Michael Benallack was named ‘man of the match’ after retiring on 20 runs and conceding just two runs from his two overs bowled.

He was also instrumental in the stumping of one Bookaar batsman and the run-out of another.
