Premiers
SIMPSON Cricket Club is celebrating a division two premiership in its inaugural season in the Colac and District Association.
In what was a nail-biting drawn finish against Irrewarra at Lake Oval on Saturday, players were left wondering “what now” as officials corresponded with the league to determine the result.
According to Simpson vice-president David Weel, players, spectators and even officials at the game were left to ponder the outcome in the minutes after the final wicket.
“At the time we were all wondering what now? As far as we all knew there hadn’t been a drawn grand final in the league for years so we weren’t quite sure what would happen next,” Weel said.
“But in the end we were awarded the win as we finished the season above Irrewarra on the ladder; we were on top and they finished third at the end of the home and away rounds.
“It was abit strange really; when you hit the winning runs on grand final day everyone celebrates, but on Saturday when the final wicket was taken and the scoreboard showed a draw it was a little odd.”
Having won the toss and elected to bat first, Irrewarra made 10/154.
Best of the bowlers for Simpson were Nicholas Harding 3/27 from 7.3 overs and Simon Hay 3/35 off eight.
In reply, Simpson reached 10/154 in the final over with opener Thomas Weel hitting a creditable 42 from 57 runs and middle-order batsman Phil Vines contributing 29.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to win a flag in our first season in a new league,” Weel said.
“Our division three side also had a great year and although didn’t make the finals, did manage a few wins along the way. It’s been a great year for our club and we’re very proud of all our teams.”
