TALENTED Pomborneit opener Dave Murphy controlled the early part of his side’s innings against Woorndoo last Saturday, providing a solid platform for the Bulls.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Bulls’ opening batsman was quick to notch up 50 from 54 balls, including four fours and three sixes.

However, fellow opener Stephen Hill (11 from 389 balls) was the only other top five batsman to make double figures and when Murphy was dismissed the Bulls were teetering at 5/82.

A 55-run partnership for the sixth wicket, between Easton Wood and Tharaka Sendanayake put the innings back on track and it was Wood, making his maiden division one half century, who guided the rest of the innings.

This ensured the side batted its full 50 overs, finishing at 9/217.

Mixing power with smart running between the wickets, Wood finished on 67 not out, with his innings including five fours and three sixes.

Youthful opening bowling duo Hunter Reynolds and Sam Darcy took early wickets to put the visitors on the back foot, while spinners Tharaka Sendanayake and Danussika Bandara kept things tight while continuing to take wickets.

The game was called off due to rain with 9/115 after 39 overs; Pomborneit claiming the points under the Duckworth Lewis method.

In the division two match at Simpson, the Bulls lost the toss and bowled first.

The side broke through early, with Finn Tolland bowling Simpson captain James Gusman.

Veteran quick Dean Tevelein was called into the attack and quickly took two wickets to have the home team 3/26.

Simpson’s middle order then attacked and took the score to 5/103, before left arm seamer Aaron Van Es, on his Pomborneit debut, broke through to claim the first of his three wickets.

Simpson’s tail, aided by some dropped catches, hit some valuable runs but were ultimately dismissed for 149 off 34.1 overs.

After losing opener Wes Lenehan with the score on 18, stand-in captain Luke Reynolds and Simon Tolland put on 51 for the second wicket before Reynolds was caught behind for 46 from 61 balls.

Tolland made 27 from 36 balls before being bowled and at 4/112 after 26.2 overs, with Stephen Walters on 10 not out and Sam Whytcross on 9 not out, the thunder, rain and wind hit – the game called off with Pomborneit 22 runs ahead of the par score of 90 and winning under the Duckworth Lewis method.

The division two Bulls remain unbeaten aftertwo games.

Division three, hosting Cobden at the Frederick Street oval, were sent in to bat by the visitors.

A patient 42 by opener Garry Riches, continuing his form from last season, held the innings together, with support from Jhai Gavin who made 15 and 14 from Jimbo Reynolds.

The Bulls posted a competitive 9/155 from40 overs.

Some early wickets to Donnie McInnes and Jhai Gavin saw Pomborneit put pressure on the Cobden batting order, but the cool heads of Cobden veterans Leigh Walsh and Matty Hanks were able to get the Knights to 5/138 when rain called off play.

This was enough to be ahead on Duckworth/Lewis.

With the Colac District Cricket association women’s competition moving back to a single division this season, last Sunday saw the clash of the two Pomborneit teams in front of a healthy crowd at the Pomborneit Recreation Reserve.

Pombo Gold batted first and despite losing star opener Jessica Moulden early, the team recovered through skipper Samantha Coxon who made 32 retired from 30 balls; well supported by Ella Saldler 24, and Tayla Renolds 22.

Pombo Gold reached 3/113 from their 20 overs.

Wicket takers for Maroon were Shae DeFrancesco, Emily Norman and Janelle Whitehead all withone each.

At 7/13 after seven overs, Maroon was in desperate trouble.

There was some exceptional fielding including a great diving catch from

Sam Coxon who also took three wickets, while Rachel Dendle and Tayla Reynolds took two wickets each.

Sisters-in-law Debra Reynolds and Kelly Reynolds batted another eight overes to get some sort of respectability to the score; the team all out for 37 when Kelly Reynolds was dismissed after facing 25 balls.

Stand-in captain Debra Reynolds top scored with 10 not out.

Despite the one-sided result the game was played in great spirits, both teams and their families packing the rooms afterwards as the club put on dinner to celebrate the game between the two Pomborneit sides.
