Rainfall remains above average

RAINFALL above the long-term average fell across Terang and Mortlake last month despite the chances of dry weather again rising.

RAINFALL above the long-term average fell across Terang and Mortlake last month despite the chances of dry weather again rising.

Terang experienced 91.4mm of rainfall through June, surpassing the long-term monthly average of 78.1mm.

The highest daily rainfall fell on June 8 with 17mm hitting the ground.

Despite the total rainfall experienced rising above the long-term monthly average, the figure fell below the total experienced in June 2022 when 115.8mm hit the ground.

Throughout the first half of 2023, Terang has experienced 383.6mm of rainfall, above the long-term average of 341.3mm over the same period.

Meanwhile in Mortlake the wet weather continued with 89mm falling over the town, above the long-term monthly average of 54.9mm.

The highest daily rainfall fell on June 8 with 24.2mm hitting the ground, the highest daily rainfall the town has experienced in 2023.

The monthly total surpassed the result recorded in June 2022, with 82.6mm falling during the same period last year.

Over the first half of 2023 Mortlake has experienced 333.8mm of rainfall, surpassing the long-term average over the same period of 257.2mm.

After three consecutive years of La Nina conditions bringing record rainfall and flooding throughout the state, the Bureau of Metrology has signalled a 70 per cent chance the hotter, drier El Nino conditions develop over Australia this year.
