THOSE who served their country will be remembered at Remembrance Day services in Terang and Mortlake this weekend.

Remembrance Day is among Australia’s largest commemorative events, providing an opportunity to reflect on and remember those who died throughout times of war, conflict or peacekeeping missions.

The Terang Returned and Services League sub-branch will host a service at the Terang war memorial on High Street, opposite the Terang Co-op IGA, from 11am on Saturday, November 11.

Terang Returned and Services League sub-branch president Terry Fidge invited the community to attend and pay their respects.

“On Saturday 11 at 11am the Terang RSL will be conducting a small Remembrance Day service in memory of those who lost their lives in not only World War One, but throughout all conflicts Australia has been involved with,” he said.

“Due to the highway remaining open it will only be a brief service, but we will also be hosting coffee and tea back at the RSL Hall.

“We’ll have the hall open for a while for those who haven’t been there before and would like to see the range of memorabilia we have on display.

“We really cannot have too large of a crowd for safety reasons but we will provide an opportunity for those who want to pay their respects or lay a wreath.

“We welcome anyone from the public to join us.”

Mortlake RSL president Merv Hampson said a small service would be held at the Mortlake war memorial at 10.45 on Saturday.

“It’s one day of the year we should never forget,” he said.

“We owe everyone who serviced so much for their sacrifice.

“It would be nice to see people come and support us as it won’t be a long service.”

The traditional Remembrance Day red poppies are being sold throughout various stores in Terang and Mortlake this week, with all funds raised being used to support the welfare of veterans and their families.
