SERVICES honouring those who fought for their country will be held across the region tomorrow, Friday, November 11.

A service will be held in Terang from 11am at the Obelisk on High Street opposite the post office.

A service will also be held at the Mortlake War Memorial on the corner of Jamieson Avenue and Officer Street from 10.45am.

While no formal service will be held in Noorat, locals wishing to pay their respects were encouraged to meet at the Noorat and District War Memorial on MacKinnons Bridge Road from 11am.

Terang Returned and Services League sub-branch president Terry Fidge said the occasion was an opportunity to reflect on those who served their country, but also on the horrors of war at a time of escalating international tension.

“It’s a time to reflect on the total loss of life and injuries over that period of time,” he said.

“That was supposed to be the war to end all wars, but looking at the current situation we’re in now; have we forgotten all about that? Have we not learnt that lesson?

“Particularly in the First World War, many people were lost from the local district – they never returned home, and families were decimated because of it.

“I think people should stop and remember how significant the First World War was, and where we are today.”

Mr Fidge, a Vietnam veteran, said a small service would be held followed by the opening of the Terang RSL Hall for anyone wishing to tour the facilities and view some of the historic memorabilia on display.

“We’ll have a normal, small service as we can’t have too many people floating around due to traffic on the highway, which we can’t close down,” he said.

“So it will be a small service but anyone attending wishing to lay a wreath is welcome to do so.”

The Terang RSL Hall (Shadforth Street) will be open after the service.

“Anyone who wants to call in and have a look at our latest developments is more than welcome,” Mr Fidge said.

“If there is enough interest, we may open up on Saturday from 10am-12noon or 1pm.”

Mortlake Returned and Services League sub-branch president Merv Hampson said a normal service was planned for Mortlake.

“It’s a very important day in our national history,” he said.

“It’s good to commemorate the fallen.”
