Lest we forget: A small service will be held in Terang next Monday, November 11, on Remembrance Day.

The Terang Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branch will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, November 11, from the Terang War Memorial on High Street.

“This year we’re going to have a service starting at 10.45am, followed by a minute’s silence at 11am,” Terang RSL sub-branch president Terry Fidge said.

“After that we’ll go back to the hall and have a cuppa for anyone who wishes to join us and have a look around at the memorabilia displays – we’ll be open until around 1pm.

“Due to being unable to close the highway, we ask everyone attended to keep off the road and stay within the grassed area.

“It will only be a small service, but anybody wishing to come along is more than welcome and anyone wishing to lay a wreath is more than welcome.”

Mr Fidge said Remembrance Day is an opportunity to pay their respects to those who had served their country, and reflect on the horrific nature of war.

“Remembrance Day is a day for all to remember all Australians who paid the ultimate sacrifice during war – from the first World War right through to the current day,” he said.

“It’s a common day we use to remember everybody.”

Mr Fidge said World War One had been called the ‘War to end all wars’ at the time of armistice, but lamented how far from accurate the idealistic expression had been.

“The significance of Remembrance Day is it is held on the anniversary of the end of World War One,” he said.

“It was supposed to be the war to end all wars, but as we’ve since found out that unfortunately has not been the case – even looking at the current situation around the world today.

“It’s a day to reflect on those who over the past century have paid the ultimate sacrifice in any conflict, anywhere in the world.”

Mr Fidge thanked all volunteers who have supported the Terang RSL through the selling of badges as part of Remembrance Day commemorations, and those in the community who had supported the cause.
