Residents invited to walk for a special cause
RESIDENTS are being invited to a special walk and catch-up next Friday to mark International Women’s Day while honouring women who have lost their lives to male violence.

GRIT Legal law clerk Zoe Wilkinson organised the event, which will be held on Friday, March 14, with the support of GRIT Legal director and principal lawyer Ann Cunningham and Excuse Me Katie’s Kate Kent.
The event will start at 7.30am at Wombeech Puyuun Reconcilliation Park on Walker Street, with the walk finishing at Excuse Me Katie’s for a cuppa and a cookie.
Ms Wilkinson said the event was inspired by a window display at Excuse Me Katie’s, which Western District Newspapers reported on last month.
“The display was created by Sarah Pollard and Kate Kent to commemorate the lives of women who were killed by male violence in 2024,” she said.
“This motivated me to act on my concern and disappointment at the lack of public conversation and advocacy regarding the appalling rates of male violence against women in Australia.
“We all have a role to play in helping to change the behaviours and attitudes that enable gender-based violence.
“I hope everyone who attends the event leaves feeling connected and empowered to do so.”
Residents are invited to join the walk wearing green – one of the International Women’s Day colours, which symbolises hope – or to join the ticketed cuppa and cookie between 8am and 10am.
A raffle will also be held on the day, with prizes donated by local businesses.
Ms Wilkinson expressed her gratitude to Ms Cunningham and Ms Kent for their support of the event.
“I’d like to thank Ann Cunningham, director of GRIT Legal, who immediately jumped on board to dedicate her time and resources to help plan the event,” she said.
“GRIT Legal has also generously provided funding for the event to ensure all proceeds could be donated to charity.”
“I’m also extremely thankful to Kate Kent of Excuse Me Katie's for hosting and supporting this event, as well as the amazing local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle.
“We are still accepting raffle prizes, if you are a local business and would like to donate an item, please contact me on 0484 331 666.”
Tickets to the cuppa and coffee are $10 per person and are available online at www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1365314.
Raffle tickets are $2 each, or three tickets for $5, and all proceeds will go towards Our Watch - an independent not-for-profit organisation which aims to shift attitudes and behaviours proven to drive violence against women.
