CAMPERDOWN’S annual Remembrance Day service looked a little different due to COVID-19 restrictions this year.

The community was not able to be invited to an official service this year due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, but residents still paid their respects.

A small number of residents going about their daily business stopped to remember all those who have served on Thursday.

Camperdown Returned and Services League (RSL) president Alan Fleming said he was pleased with the service.

He said RSL paid its tribute to the 102nd anniversary of the end of World War 1.

“It’s important to recognise that we’ve never given sufficient recognition to the effect of the horrific losses on our families,” Mr Fleming said.

“There were such a high percentage of families affected. Many soldiers coming home after WW1 that were shell shocked.

“We still haven’t got a handle on the ability to look after our soldiers on their return.”

He said 2020 had been an unusual year which had affected not only Remembrance Day, but Anzac Day and key fundraising initiatives like the Poppy Appeal.

“In a normal year the purpose of the poppy appeal is to raise funds for the support of veterans and their families,” Mr Fleming said.

“It’s proved hard this year to raise funds. We’re grateful to those who have been able to contribute.

“The Camperdown RSL is always looking for new members so that we can continue the welfare work within our district.”

Donations can be made to the Poppy Appeal at poppyappeal.com.au.

Lest we forget.
