Return of Derri’ market proves to be a success

THE return of Derrinallum’s Town and Country Markets has seen a favourable response from both the community and travelers alike.

The most recent market, held on January 28, hosted 33 stalls under the elms along Derrinallum’s Main Street.

Other attractions on the day included displays, vintage cars, motorbikes and caravans, food vans, and a solo drummer who provided entertainment for those browsing.

Market organiser Ray Pfeiffer said the community “really got into” the market.

“We’re doing this for the community. A lot of the community, you see their faces and being such a small tight-knit community you sort of know everybody anyway,” she said.

“It was a nice day, so it was great to see everyone come out and support the stallholders.

“One of the guys turned around and said to us ‘we need sandpits for the kids’.

“He said they were playing in the dirt, so we organised two sandpits with some toys there, and the kids were playing in it and the parents just thought it was wonderful because they were having a great time as well.”

The Lismore and District Lions Club held a sausage sizzle at the markets, managing to sell out of both sausages and hamburgers over the course of the day.

The club managed to raise $486 through their sausage sizzle, which will go towards the Rossiter family.

The family was involved in accident in early January which claimed the life of their 12-year-old daughter and left her parents and sister seriously injured, with the efforts of the Lions club part of the Derrinallum and Lismore communities’ efforts to assist the family during their recovery.

Ms Pfeiffer said the next raffle to be held through the markets will also donate proceeds to the family.

“The one we just had went to 31 Main Street, which is the new arts and crafts shop that just opened up in Derrinallum,” she said.

“We give it back to the community.”

The next market, the last one until November, will be held on March 24.

“We only have three a year; they are on in November, January and March,” Ms Pfeiffer said.

“It’s the fourth Sunday of those months from 9am until 1pm.

Anyone who would be interested in running a stall at the next market, or who would like to find out more, can ring Ms Pfeiffer on 0427 764 299.
