FONTERRA Australia is partnering with former AFL player Wayne Schwass and the Black Dog Institute to start a discussion about mental health in Cobden.

Fonterra is hosting a Healthy Minds Community Event on Wednesday, April 19 between 7pm and 9pm at the Cobden Football Netball Club.

The event was orginally scheduled to be held in 2021 but was postponed due to COVID regulations.

Fonterra Cobden site manager Nick Hayes said Fonterra has partnered with Wayne Schwass from PukaUp and Black Dog Institute to help facilitate a conversation around mental health in south west Victoria.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work around creating a mentally healthy Fonterra family and a culture where people feel comfortable talking about their mental health,” he said.

“When we talk about a mentally healthy Fonterra family, it’s not just people within our business. It’s also our farmers and our communities – because they’re an important part of who we are and what we do.”

Mr Hayes said Mr Schwass will be running the session and will share his story as well as having a conversation around the importance of having a healthy mind.

“We want people to walk away with the tools they need to look after their own mental health and feel equipped to have conversations on mental health with those around them,” he said.

Having battled silently with his own mental health for much of his sporting career, Mr Schwass is now a dedicated mental health advocate, committed to raising awareness about mental health, emotional wellbeing and suicide prevention.
