ONE-HUNDRED years of Scouts was celebrated in Cobden over the weekend.
The 1st Cobden Scout Group was forced to cancel its 100th birthday celebrations last year due to COVID, with both current and past members able to get together to reminisce over two days.
Group leader John Wason said the celebrations went well.
“It was really good. We had about 40 people come,” he said.
“The Saturday night was at the Cobden Civic Hall and Sunday was back at the Scout Hall.
“There was lots of memorabilia set up that got people talking.
“Everyone enjoyed themselves and were happy to talk about their memories.”
Mr Wason said a highlight of the weekend was having about 10 Queens Scouts attending the celebrations, including the original Queens Scout from 1957.
“People loved being able to see that scouts was still going strong,” he said.
“I’d like to thank the organising committee for its hard work and especially my leaders Mandy and Amy for their efforts.”
Scouts began in Cobden in 1921 with 13 boys and the meetings were held in the Cobden Football sheds.
It was not until 1940 the Scout committee acquired an old hall from the banks of Lake Elingamite and moved it to its present position.
In 1954 more work was done on improvements to the hall with money raised going to a kitchen, office and four patrol corners,” he said.
Extensive renovations were done to the hall in 2013/14.
