A SECOND Rotary club for Camperdown moved a step closer this month.

Group chairman Rob Harris said a meeting to gauge interest from within the community was held earlier this month, with 15 people in attendance.

He said there was also a numberof apologies.

Mr Harris said he and District Governor John Clue addressed the meeting, with Mr Clue sharing the history of Rotary and how it is involved in all levels of community service.

“There were several questions asked throughout the presentation and the meeting ended with some of the attendees committing to furthering the goals of the club by volunteering to join a steering committee,” he said.

“Rotary International has approved the concept to form an alternate Rotary club in Camperdown.”

Mr Harris said having multiple clubs in communities was not unusual.

“For example, there are three Rotary clubs in Colac and four in Warrnambool,” he said.

Mr Harris reiterated forming a second club was not in competition with the current Rotary Club of Camperdown.

“But rather, it’s an alternate club with a younger membership base and a different format of monthly meetings,” he said.

“The steering committee will be meeting to look at ways to grow a committed membership base of 20 Rotarians so that the provisional club can be fully chartered and are looking at a dinner meeting in the next few weeks to further share and discuss the goals.”
