CAMPERDOWN’s SES unit recently teamed up with Ambulance Victoria for a special training session.

The training session allowed both services to share skills, enabling better coordination during an emergency.

Community engagement officer Kylie Warren said the SES training nights were conducted every Monday, and routinely tried to involve other local services to keep skills current and support interaction.

“We just approached Ambulance Victoria with the intent of keeping our skills and theirs, and our knowledge up to date so that we can perform better on scene,” she said.

“For any rescue operations or patient transports, the ambulance officers know that they can call on us to utilise our little stretcher if there’s a casualty who needs to be transported from an inaccessible area.

“If there’s a child trapped in a car, they now know they can call in our services to place a plastic film over the windscreen or the window that needs to be broken to limit the amount of glass that would impact the vehicle or the casualty inside.”

Ms Warren said it was a good night, with lots of interaction and positive comments from both parties.

“From our point of view, it was a success,” she said.

Ms Warren said while there was no concrete plans, the SES has regular updates whenever new equipment or skills are introduced, or if they’ve been advised ambulance officers have specific requests.
