Session hopes to spread awareness
IT is estimated almost 300 people in Corangamite Shire are living with dementia.
The condition can have many causes and can develop at any stage of life, not just among the elderly.
Mayor Kate Makin invited residents to attend a light lunch and learn about the many types of the condition which causes a progressive decline in a person’s functioning.
“Counsellor Jason Kelly from Dementia Australia will provide an introduction to how the condition affects behaviour and the impacts of those changes,” she said.
“He will talk about problem-solving models including strategies to minimise and respond to changed behaviour.”
Cr Makin said a lack of understanding in the wider community may lead to people experiencing stigma and discrimination in the community.
“About two-thirds of people with dementia live in the community,” she said.
“Council is committed to supporting a connected and thriving community where everyone has access to community life, free of discrimination.
“I encourage everyone who can make it to come along and learn so we can make our communities more dementia-friendly for individuals facing these challenges, along with their families and other supporters.”
Mr Kelly said this year’s Dementia Action Week Theme is, ‘Act now for a dementia friendly future’.
“We would love your help to inspire communities across Australia to take action and make our communities more inclusive and supportive for people impacted by dementia,” he said.
Dementia Action Week, September 16-22, is a major leadership, awareness and advocacy campaign for people living with dementia, their families and carers.
The session will be held on Monday, September 16 at 10am at the Killara Centre, Camperdown.
