Significant day for Police

FRIDAY will mark Blue Ribbon Day this year, which also coincides with National Police Remembrance Day.
Blue Ribbon Day is a chance for the community to say thank you to those who protect and serve the community as well as those who have fallen are never forgotten.
The Foundation first launched Blue Ribbon Day in 1999, after the outpouring of community support for Senior Constable Rodney Miller and Sergeant Gary Silk who were killed on August 16, 1998.
The campaign pays tribute to and remembers the 175 Victoria police officers who have died in the line of duty, while saying thank you to all Victoria Police officers for their work in serving and protecting the community.
Cobden Police Sergeant Craig Jenkins and Senior Constable Ash Pitt took a moment to reflect on why they joined the police force as well as acknowledging the importance of Blue Ribbon Day.
Sgt Jenkins said Blue Ribbon Day was “significant day”.
“It allows us to pay our respects for those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for what we do to provide a safer world for our community,” he said.
“It allows us to reflect on the purpose of our job and what we do, and the risks associated times with it.
“It also allows us, and the community, to acknowledge the sacrifice that people have made to try and bring some good into the world.”
Sgt Jenkins has spent more than 20 years in the police force and said he joined because he likes helping people.
“Doing this job hopefully enables me to help someone each day,” he said.
“It’s a sense of fulfilment you get in helping someone and making their life better.
“I don’t think I can change the world, but if I can make someone world a little bit better, I think I’ve done a good deed.”
Snr Const Pitt said he joined the Police force four years ago.
“I joined because I wanted to pay back to the community,” he said.
“I just want to provide a safer community and help those in need.
“I enjoy being able to represent the victims and hopefully make a difference in their lives.”
