SIMPSON and district residents gathered last week to learn about a new culture.

Last Tuesday, a Harmony Day event was held at the Simpson Public Hall giving residents a chance to learn about the Philippine culture and cuisine.

Simpson and District Community Centre co-ordinator Debbie Smith said there were an estimated 50 people from the Philippines living in the area.

She described the day as “fabulous”.

“It was just amazing,” Mrs Smith said.

“The community really enjoyed it; the feedback was all positive.

“There was about 200 people.”

As well as members of the wider community, Simpson Playgroup, Simpson Kindergarten and Simpson Primary School children attended the special celebration.

Harmony Day featured a number of traditional dances, singing, costumes and was followed by a Philippine banquet which featured a roasted suckling pig, spring rolls, stir fry noodles, Filipino Adobo and purple yam cake.

Mrs Smith said the dancing was popular with attendees as well as the banquet.

She said she hoped to have more similar days in the future.
