SIMPSON’S senior footballers have their eyes set on a 2022 finals campaign.

Currently sitting in fourth, a game and a half behind third placed Irrewarra-Beeac and second placed South Colac, the Tigers will be looking to remain in the top five come season’s end.

Having only recorded just three wins last year, Tigers coach Daniel Beard said he was thrilled with his side’s improvement and where it was currently sitting on the ladder.

“We’re very happy with where we sit now with just six games left. It would be a super result for us as a club if we get to play finals this year,” Beard said.

“At the start of the season it’s everyone’s dream to finish top three but we never set ourselves that target – our aim was to improve on the previous year."

“As a group we wanted to be competitive and to possibly have a chance at playing finals and at the moment we’re on track for that which is incredible.”

The Tigers will take on second-placed South Colac this weekend in what is anticipated will be a tough battle.

The two sides last met in round four when the Tigers went down by 40 points on South’s home ground.

This weekend will be at Simpson and Beard is keen to see where his charges are currently at.

“It will be interesting to see how we go against them at home,” Beard said.

“We’ve had a few home-grown boys return to pull on the boots again this year, along with a few new recruits, and they’re all working well."

“This Saturday will give us a good indication of how we’re travelling. It’d be great to pick up a few more wins as the finals approach.”

After this weekend, the remainder of the home-and-away season will see the Tigers face Colac Imperials, Alvie, Otway Districts, Irrewarra-Beac and then Lorne in the final round.

“It is certainly a tough run home for us but fortunately four of those six games will be played at home,” Beard said.

“Colac Imps and Alvie are the two top sides and the remaining three are in the first seven so we’ll have some close ones. Fingers crossed we’ll be there come finals.”
