IT was a case of ‘smooth sailing’ for a large group of participants at last month’s training weekend at Derrinallum’s Deep Lake.
For a second year, the Derrinallum Yacht and Power Boat Club played host to Yachting Western Victoria’s event, attracting more than 40 participants and vessels.
An introduction to sailing was given by regional instructor Michael Doherty on the first morning before the group was divided in to groups of learners and intermediate sailors.
Participants were given instructions on rigging, wind, various parts of a yacht and water safety before heading out on to Deep Lake (with safety vessels nearby).
The afternoon was also spent on the water, learning to navigate a short course and playing tennis ball touch tiggy (an effective means of learning to navigate yachts on a crowded start line).
Day two saw participants learn how to right a yacht after tipping, and further develop basic sailing skills.
Perfect weather conditions made for ideal sailing.
The club is grateful to all event sponsors, participants and to the volunteers who provided input and support throughout the weekend; along with those from Portland, Colac and Warrnambool clubs who attended.
The event was deemed a ‘huge success’ and anyone who missed out but is interested in learning to sail should contact the club.
