DESPITE a 21-point loss on the weekend, Timboon Demons coach Marcus Hickey was thrilled with his side’s four-quarter performance.

The Demons kick started their 2023 Warrnambool District League campaign in solid form, earning the praises of their coach.

“I was really thrilled with how the boys went, particularly given it was only round one,” Hickey said.

“All last season I was asking for a solid four quarter effort and to get that in round one is really pleasing.

“We were right with them (Dennington) for most of the game and we kicked the first three goals of the final term to come within about four points.

“They were able to wrestle it back but to the boys’ credit they ran out the game and put in a big effort; can’t ask for much more than that.”

Hickey said his side would put in a big training session ahead of this weekend’s Easter break before taking on Nirranda the following weekend.

“Round two against Nirranda will give us an indication of where we’re at,” Hickey said.

“They’re a quality side and the match-ups will show our strengths and weaknesses.

“We were a bit fumbly early on last Saturday but that’s to be expected in round one. We stuck to our structures and that was pleasing.”

Final scores on Saturday were Dennington 9.15.69 to Timboon 7.6.48.

Goal kickers for the Demons were Tadgh Dwyer (3) and Ben Harding (2) with singles to Ben Newey and Luke Smith.

Among the best were Tadgh Dwyer, Mitchell Wallace, Samuel Cole, Craig Dower, Luke Smith and Samuel Newey.

In the reserves, the Demons went down by 63 points, 10.5.65 to 0.2.2

Best for the Demons were Jayden Stapleton, Sullivan Wallace, Max Bond, Eddie Gaut, Cody Merrett and Eaghan Cronin.

It was a mixed bag of results for Timboon’s netballers with wins in A grade (49-47), A reserve (48-28) and 15 and unders (17-14), a 28-28 draw in the 17 and under match and a loss in both the B grade (45-21) and 13 and under (53-4) games.
