South West Games are back for ‘22

THE South West Games is back for 2022 and after 37 years South West Sport is changing things up by introducing the ‘New Generation’ games.
While the games have long had a focus on traditional competition, this year they are encouraging sporting clubs and community organisations to think more broadly about the types of events they could host, as part of the nine-day celebration of community sport and recreation across the region.
The organisation knows it has been a challenging environment for community sport over the last two years so is encouraging clubs to utilise the games as a way to showcase their clubs and what opportunities they have for new participants and potential members.
South West Sport executive officer Marc Tims said the ‘New Generation’ games was about championing community participation and encouraging new people of all ages and all abilities to experience what the region’s sport and recreation clubs have to offer.
Thanks to support from Corangamite Shire Council, this year’s games will be hosted in Corangamite running from Saturday October 15 to Sunday October 23.
“South West Sport is encouraging and supportive of clubs right across the south west who want to be involved,” Mr Tims said.
It will be up to sporting clubs and community organisations as to how they get involved, however the organisation is hoping to see a broad range of events put forward from come and try days, social participation opportunities, exhibition matches, right through to modified and traditional competitions.
“It is important that the range of activities on offer across the nine-day event reflects the broader community’s needs, not just those actively involved in traditional competition, providing opportunities for women, young people, and people with a disability to participate”, Mr Tims said.
“The team at South West Sport is looking forward to supporting clubs to develop ideas and plan events to ensure that the ‘New Generation’ games is inclusive and provides opportunities for the whole community to be involved.”
South West Sport is looking to support clubs to make the event a success.
This includes not only support in planning, but the first 20 clubs to submit an approved event plan will be provided with $250 to support the delivery of their event.
Clubs looking to get involved are encouraged to check out the website for more information and to register their interest www.southwestsport.com.au/swgames.
