SOME of South West Cricket Association’s finest put on a great display against powerhouse Warrnambool last weekend.

While they didn’t walk away with the win, South West Cricket Association captain Simon Harkness said his side put in a “great effort” against the league powerhouse.

Last Sunday’s Hudson Shield match, which saw SWC take on Warrnambool District, proved the perfect opportunity for some of south west’s strongest to test their skills.

“It was a great day of cricket and although we didn’t win, I’m really proud of the team and the way everyone handled themselves against some tough opposition,” Harkness said.

“Warrnambool District is an absolute powerhouse so to take it up to them like we did is a credit to all the boys.

“We managed to make around 150 which was pleasing.”

Harkness praised the efforts of Camperdown’s Tharindu Rukshan who made a solid 50-odd runs, along with his fellow clubman John McLaughlin who finished with around 25.

“We scraped together a pretty decent score on what was a tricky turf wicket, then we followed that up with the ball.

“Our bowlers really performed well; the likes of Pomborneit’s Danussika Gamaralalage and Thanaka Sendanayake gave us plenty of spin and really got us back into the game.”

With one win and one loss now under their belts – the result of a win against Portland the previous week – the South West team will now look to Country Week in 2023.

“Country Week will run in Melbourne in February and we’re really keen to have a good crack at that,” Harkness said.

“Playing representative cricket is a great thrill, and a real honour, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do come February.”
