Sport stars announced
SPORTS stars across the district were rewarded for their achievements during last week’s Corangamite Sportsman’s Club presentation evening.

SPORTS stars across the district were rewarded for their achievements during last week’s Corangamite Sportsman’s Club presentation evening.
More than 60 guests enjoyed dinner at Cobden’s Thommo’s Hotel on Wednesday, including local physiotherapist Stuart Canavan who was guest speaker.
Awards were presented to the monthly ‘stars’ from April through to September.
This included the following recipients:
April:
Senior sports team – Camperdown Bowls Club.
Camperdown was victorious at the West Coast Region Fours with skipper Ron Cameron, Mathew Brewer, Barry Atchison and Kelvin Rundle.
They defeated Portland in the grand final,16-14, after a win against Dunkeld 23-20.
May:
Junior sports team – Camperdown College (bowls).
This team took out the School Sport Victoria Secondary Senior Bowls state championships.
Team members Isaac Winsall, Tyler Newcombe, Kona Kerr and Jacob Brown defeated Doncaster Secondary 8-6 in the semi-final then went on to defeat Sunbury 11-9 in the grand final.
The team practiced in the school corridors during recess and lunch breaks.
They are the youngest team in the senior division and from one of the smallest schools in the competition.
Senior sports star – George Beasley.
George, 18, shot a one under par (106) in the 27-hole event to win the Marc Leishman Trophy in Terang.
He was also awarded the KG Horne Memorial Trophy for the under 21 scratch winner on the day.
Senior sports team – Terang Ladies Division 1 golf.
Team members Sharee Scanlon, Cate Glennon, Jenny Meade, Margie Driscoll, Aileen Clarke and Karen Mather won the Western District Golf Association division one pennant title, defeating Camperdown (1) 3-2.
June:
Junior sports star – Trent Waixel.
Trent won gold in the 14-15 year old male points sparring (kumite) in round two of the National All Styles martial arts tournament in Doncaster.
He recently moved to Camperdown from WA and has been training in Terang after a six-year break from the sport.
Senior sports star – Caytlyn Sharp.
Caytlyn, who competes under the T/F20 disability sports classification, won silver in the javelin event at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Mackay.
She also jumped a PB of 4.81 in the long jump to finish fourth and ran a time of 14:30 in the 100m race.
July:
Junior sports star – Lynley Sharp.
Thirteen year-old Lynley won silver at the western region cross-country carnival in Casterton and along with her siblings has been a long-time member of little athletics.
Senior sports team – Heytesbury Bowls.
This team won the 2022 Victorian Indoor Bias Bowls Association title and won the ladies’ triples championships (Pam Wines, Jenny Meade and Dianne Tobin).
August:
Junior sports star – Lara Taylor.
Lara won the Hampden League 17 and under best and fairest award.
The Cobden player polled 36 votes in the count and was also part of Cobden’s premiership side.
Junior sports star – Rhys Unwin.
Rhys won Hampden League’s under 16 football best and fairest.
The Cobden midfielder polled 30 votes, 10 clear of the runner-up.
The 15-year-old also played representative footy for GWV Rebels in the under 16 team at this year’s VLine Cup.
Senior team – Timboon Bowls.
Senior sports star – Arthur Finch (bowls).
September:
Junior sports star – Stella Horspole.
The talented 15 year-old won the under 18 ‘Smartest on Parade,’ the child’s Galloway under 15 hands and was then named overall champion at The Royal Adelaide Show.
Junior team – Cobden 17 and under netball.
The Bombers won the 2022 Hampden League premiership in an upset win over the previously undefeated Koroit Saints.
Coached by Nadine McNamara and Sarah Moroney the team comprised Lara Taylor, Grace Taylor, Paige Compton, Kate Smith, Jessica Bouchier, Jessica Walsh, Tahlia Berry, Emily Darcy and Matilda Darcy.
Senior sports star – Remeny McCann.
Remeny took out the Hampden League open best and fairest ‘Dot Jenkins Award’ in 2022.
The talented goal keeper polled 33 votes to win by five.
The final awards night for 2022 will be held in December where the overall ‘Stars of the Year’ will be announced.
