Sportsman's Club presents awards

SPORTING teams and players from across the district were recognised during the Corangamite Sportsman’s Club’s October ‘Sports Stars’ dinner.

SPORTING teams and players from across the district were recognised during the Corangamite Sportsman’s Club’s October ‘Sports Stars’ dinner.

Several awards were presented throughout the evening, recognising the efforts of local teams and individuals over the past six months.

Award winners were as follows:

April

Junior Sports Star – Zane Vogels (cycling).

Zane finished the summer season aggregate on top of the leaderboard with 40 points, just one point ahead of second place.

Zane travels from Scott’s Creek to Camperdown each week to compete in races and has shown consistency throughout the season to take first place.

May

Senior Sports Star – Tom Roberts (barefoot water skiing).

A Cobden resident, Tom won his first gold medal at the national championships in Queensland (after his ninth appearance at the event).

Competing in the under 23 division for the first time, he took the overall win after coming first in the jumps, slalom and tricks disciplines.

His performance also earned him selection in the Australian open squad for next year’s world championships.

This capped off a great season for Roberts, who also finished fifth overall in the junior 2023 International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation World Barefoot Championships in Mulwala.

Senior team - Camperdown ladies division one golf pennant team.

This team defeated Terang to take out the Western District Golf Association division one pennant title.

Congratulations to players Marg White, Gabby Gill, Tracey Baker, Jenny Hillman, Donna Conheady and Terri Sinnott.

July

Senior team – Heytesbury Indoor Bowls.

Players Scott Pierce, Gary Body and Allen Armistead took out the VIBBA men’s triples state title, played in Sunshine.

August

Senior Sports Star – Darcy Tribe (surf lifesaving).

Darcy, who is now in his 20s, started Nippers as a six year-old.

He is now a club captain who organises patrols.

Junior Sports Star – Eli Kerr (swimming).

Twelve-year-old Eli won seven medals (six gold and one bronze) at the Victorian Short Course country swimming championships in Wangaratta.

Eli, who trains in Warrnambool, won the medals in he 14 and under multi-class category in 50m freestyle, backstroke, breastroke, butterfly and 100m individual medal and freestyle events.

The bronze was won in the Open able-bodied para 4x4 freestyle relay.

September

Senior Sports Star – Hamish Sinnott (football).

Hamish won the Hampden Football Netball League senior best and fairest after topping the poll with 18 votes.

The talented Camperdown footballer also took home Hampden’s Rising Star of the Year award.

He has enjoyed time with VFL club Carlton this year and hopes to work his way towards the AFL draft.

Junior Sports Star – Indiana Cameron (netball).

Indi won the Hampden League’s 15 and under best and fairest award, polling 44 out of a possible 54 votes.

Junior Team – St Patrick’s mixed netball

This team took out the 2023 Primary School State Championships after going through the tournament undefeated.

The team comprises students Daisy Bennett, Courtney Blain, Taylor Cameron, Daisy Courtney, Madison Lucas, Zoe Roberts, Darby Sinnott, Harry Sinnott, Vincent Titmus and Olive Wills.

They are coached by Marie Wall.
