TERANG Mortlake’s strong start to the season continued last weekend with a 13-point win over Cobden.

After a relatively slow start on Saturday, the Bloods hit their strides in the second and executed well, making the most of turnovers and applying pressure all over the ground.

Bloods coach Ben Kenna could not have been prouder of his side, saying the win would give an added sense of self-belief to the players.

“Cobden is a quality side and to take the points over them is a real credit to the boys,” Kenna said.

“We were challenged in the first half, Cobden was playing really well and they got the better of us early.

“But to the boys credit they dug deep and just hit our targets and executed better in the second half.”

Kenna said while turnovers were hurting in the first half, the Bloods kicked better in the second and applied greater pressure.

“Our pressure on Cobden was certainly better in the second half and we slowly crept back into the game. To be down by about four goals at half-time and then find our way back into the game was good to see.”

With a split round this weekend, the Bloods will have the week off before taking on Portland at Mortlake on Saturday, May 6.

“It’s certainly early days but to be three (wins) from three is certainly a great start to the season,” Kenna said.

“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves but it’s probably been quite a while since we’ve won the first three. Like all clubs we’ll be looking to improve as the weeks go on and be in the action at the latter part of the season.”

In the reserves, Terang Mortlake was overpowered by Cobden, going down by 37 points, 7.2.44 to 12.9.81.

Best for the Bloods were Jordan Harris, Connor Cardwell, Jack Lehmann, Toby Harris, Ben Reid and Ryan Tanners.

Goals went to Jack Lehmann (3), Josh Brown, Jordi Dwyer, Toby Harris and Jake Lee.

In the under 18.5 competition, Terang Mortlake found Cobden too strong and went down by 99 points, 4.3.27 to 19.14.128.

Best players for the Bloods were Tyler Vickers, Charlie Calvert, Ned Roberts, Damien Goddard, Mitch Hughes and Charlie Leishman.
