Strong start under new leadership

COBDEN’S senior footballers kick-started their 2024 Hampden League campaign with a 45-point win over Hamilton last weekend.

Having lost to Terang Mortlake in the semi-final last season finishing fifth after the home and away rounds, the Bombers will be looking to earn their spot on grand final day come September.

Under the leadership of new coach Brody Mahony and assistant Grady Rooke the Bombers thrilled their home crowd on Saturday, finishing 6.13.49 to the Kangaroos 4.6.30.

Best for the Bombers were Grady Rooke, Sam Lucas, Harrison Herschell, Luke Smith, Michael Koroneos and Caleb Smith.

Koroneos kicked four goals for the home side while other contributors on the scoreboard were Ben Berry, Matt Clarke, Jack Hammond, Henry Robertson, Grady Rooke and Caleb Smith.

In the reserves, Cobden (preliminary finalists in 2023) enjoyed a 98-point win over Hamilton, 19.11.125 to 4.3.27.

Best for the Bombers were Luke Hickey, Joshua Hickey, Tom Mahony, Brady Green, Lachie Davis and Thomas Darcy.

Goals went to Thomas Darcy and Brady Green (four each), Luke Hickey (3), Oliver Darcy and Joshua Hickey (two each), Louis Darcy, Tyler Humphrey, Bailey Vines and Joshua Worboys.

The under 18s were defeated by Hamilton, 3.4.22 to 8.13.61.

Best for the home side were Campbell Walsh, Parker Walsh, Brodey Muller-de Vent, Kurtis Baker, Thomas Noy and Jonty Robertson.

Kurtis Baker, Billy Buck and Brodie Foster kicked a goal each.

Cobden’s under 16s went down to Hamilton by 54 points, 3.9.27 to 11.15.81, while the under 14s also lost, 4.0.24 to 14.11.95.

Round two this weekend will see the Bombers head to Victoria Park to take on the Saints.

The two sides last met in last season’s elimination final, where the Bombers fought hard for a 28-point win.
