Students learn about gas plants
DOZENS of local secondary school students have learnt more about potential career pathways by touring Beach Energy’s Otway Gas Plant as part of the work of local charitable organisation Neil Porter Legacy.
Throughout his teaching career Mr Porter had a passion for helping students enter careers which matched their interests, and the Neil Porter Legacy was formed after his death in June 2018.
Students from Cobden Technical School, Timboon P-12 School, Hampden Specialist School, Camperdown College and Derrinallum College attended workshops hosted by the industry and toured several local energy producer sites including Beach’s Otway Gas Plant near Port Campbell.
Beach Energy senior community relations manager Victoria Sharon Donovan said Beach had formed a substantial three-year partnership with Neil Porter Legacy to ensure young people were aware of the various pathways to secure jobs in their region.
“Beach is proud to partner with Neil Porter Legacy to provide information about our industry that may generate interest from students in an exciting career in their local community,” she said.
“At Beach, our community investment program identifies locally-led initiatives that are aligned with our focus on helping to build sustainable and resilient communities and the Neil Porter Legacy certainly delivers in that respect.
“The team at Otway Gas Plant is proud to showcase the work our local workforce does to safely deliver energy for Victoria.”
The Neil Porter Legacy Energy Industry Day is also supported by other local industry operators including Cooper Energy and Lochard Energy who, along with Beach, also have operations in the Otway Basin.
Neil Porter Legacy co-founder Matt Porter thanked Beach Energy for its support.
“Beach Energy’s support is amazing,” he said.
“We facilitate students visiting businesses to enable them to make informed career-based decisions and having enthusiastic partners like Beach open their doors and give so much time to our programs is incredible.
“Beach is also generously supporting our work in Corangamite Shire for three years and that enables us to offer considerably more programs to local schools across a vast array of industries.”
