Shire planning co-ordinator Melanie Oborne said the planning application was for a 13 lot subdivision with a common property driveway on a 6000 square metres.

She said the subdivision would facilitate an increase in housing supply and diversity within the township.

“The proposal seeks to deliver an infill residential development which maintains the preferred coastal character of Port Campbell at a greater density than conventional and existing development,” Ms Oborne said.

The application received one objection, with the submitter raising a number of issues which included:

  • Density of the development;

  • Inconsistency with coastal township character;

  • Stormwater and drainage; and

  • Impacts from future built form.

Coastal Ward councillor Jamie Vogels said the township of Port Campbell has a diverse range of residents who own property “for many various reasons in one of the most sought after areas within our shire”.

“The 13 lot subdivision is a valuable addition to the diversity,” he said.

Cr Vogels said land supply was constrained in Port Campbell.

“It’s an outstanding outcome for the town,” he said.

Cr Laurie Hickey said there were 34 conditions attached to the application which would need to be adheared to.

“I’m very confident the subdivision will be in character with what’s available throughout Port Campbell,” he said.

“Any chance we have to increase the housing within our shire has got to be a positive step.”

However, Cr Ruth Gstrein said she was “certainly concerned” about the proposal.

“I’m just concerned, we don’t need to reinvent Caroline Springs in Port Campbell,” she said.

“I think it’s important we do keep that low coastal character.”

The application was approved unanimously.
